Our Family’s Florida Travel Story
Our family has been traveling to Florida at least once a year for the past 10 years, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that family vacations are basically controlled chaos with a beach view.
Over the years, we’ve forgotten things, overpacked things, packed things we never touched, and somehow still ended up buying things when we arrived. If you’ve ever stood in a Walmart three states away wondering why nobody packed sunscreen, you’re my people.
The tips, products, and checklists I’m sharing in this post aren’t from one vacation. They’re from years of trial and error, road trips, beach days, last-minute store runs, and figuring out what actually makes life easier when you’re traveling with kids.
When our girls were younger, the drive from Illinois to Florida felt like we were preparing for an expedition across the country. Somewhere between the snacks, bathroom stops, forgotten chargers, and “Are we there yet?” questions, we’ve learned a few things that make the trip smoother.
This year was the most prepared I’ve ever felt heading into a beach vacation. For once, I wasn’t mentally making a list at 2 a.m. wondering what I forgot. We packed smarter, spent less money, avoided unnecessary stops, and honestly enjoyed the trip more because of it.
That’s exactly why I created these free checklists.
Not because I’m some travel expert with a perfectly color-coded suitcase. Trust me, I’m not.
I created them because I know how stressful vacation planning can feel, especially when you’re trying to coordinate an entire family and stay within a budget.
My hope is that these lists save you time, save you money, and help you avoid that moment when you’re standing in a beach store paying vacation prices for something you already own at home.
So grab a coffee, a Diet Coke, an energy drink, or whatever is getting you through the day, and let’s talk about everything that made this year’s trip easier, cheaper, and a whole lot more enjoyable.

What Worked Best This Year
After years of beach vacations, a few things really stood out on this trip. Some were brand-new purchases, while others were simple changes that made our vacation smoother, less stressful, and more enjoyable.
Our 10×10 Beach Canopy
This was probably my favorite purchase for the entire trip. In previous years, we rented beach chairs and umbrellas, but the cost adds up quickly. This year, I purchased a 10×10 pop-up canopy with sand-filled support bags, and it was incredibly easy to set up.
One of my favorite features was the adjustable height. We could lower the back legs later in the day to help block the sun, which made a huge difference during the hottest part of the afternoon.

The Beach Blanket Was a Game Changer
For years, we packed multiple beach towels and tried to use them as a place to sit. This year, I switched to a large waterproof and sand-resistant beach blanket.
Not only did it give us more room to spread out, but it also kept sand from getting everywhere. We could save our towels for drying off and use the blanket as our home base on the beach.

A Smaller Cooler Worked Better Than a Large One
In the past, we packed a giant cooler. While it held a lot, dragging it through the sand was never fun.
This year we brought a smaller cooler that was lightweight, easy to carry, and still held enough snacks and drinks for the day. It was also small enough to keep in the middle of our Traverse during the drive, which made grabbing snacks much easier.
We used reusable ice packs during the drive and then used ice from the resort as needed throughout the week.

Our Snack Setup Saved Us Time and Money
One of the best decisions we made this year was skipping fast food and gas station snacks during the drive.
We packed frozen Uncrustables, strawberries, cucumbers, apples, mixed nuts, chips, granola bars, juice boxes, water jugs, and a few fun treats. Everything fit perfectly into a tote bag that stayed within easy reach in the car.
Not only did we save money, but we also avoided a lot of unnecessary stops and arrived at our resort earlier than expected.

Family Beach Vacation Packing List
After years of family beach vacations, I’ve learned that packing is either the thing that sets your trip up for successβor the thing that causes stress before you even leave the driveway.
That’s exactly why I created this family beach vacation packing list.
Instead of trying to remember everything at the last minute, I keep a running list of the items our family actually uses and update it each year based on what worked and what didn’t.
The complete Beach Vacation Packing Checklist is included in my free Family Beach Vacation Bundle, along with my Road Trip Snack Checklist and Walmart Vacation Grocery List.
If you haven’t downloaded it yet, you can grab it above and save it for your next trip.

Having a checklist ready before packing day helps me stay organized and makes it much less likely that I’ll forget something important.

Our Favorite Road Trip Snacks
One of the biggest changes we made this year was deciding to skip fast food and unnecessary gas station stops as much as possible.
Not only did it save us money, but it also saved time and helped us avoid feeling sluggish from eating greasy food all day.
Because two of my daughters and I struggle with motion sickness, having lighter snack options throughout the trip worked much better for us than heavy meals.
Our snack setup included:
π Strawberries
π₯ Cut cucumbers
π Mandarin oranges
π Apples
π₯ Mixed nuts
π₯ͺ Frozen Uncrustables
π« M&M’s and Starburst
πͺ Oreos
π₯€ Juice boxes
π§ Water jugs for refilling reusable water bottles
β‘ Energy drinks for the adults
We packed everything in a small cooler and kept our snacks within easy reach during the drive. One of my favorite little hacks was using an Aldi tote bag to organize everything and keep it accessible from the middle of the vehicle.
Our family voted to drive straight through this year instead of stopping overnight, and having plenty of snack choices helped make the trip much more enjoyable.
Everyone could grab what they wanted without constantly stopping for food, and we actually arrived early enough to check into our resort ahead of schedule.

Our Walmart Vacation Grocery List
One thing that has worked really well for our family is making a Walmart stop shortly after arriving at our destination.
Instead of purchasing everything from resort stores, convenience stores, or beachside shops, we stock up on groceries for the week and save a surprising amount of money.
Some of the items we typically buy include:
β Coffee, creamer, and sugar
π₯ Milk and orange juice
π Bread
π₯ Peanut butter and jelly
π₯£ Cereal
π³ Eggs and bacon
π Fresh fruit
π₯ Salad kits
π§ Juice boxes
π¦ Ice cream sandwiches
πͺ Favorite cookies and snacks
𧴠Extra sunscreen
Buying a few basics upfront helps us spend less throughout the week and gives us easy breakfast and snack options before heading out for the day.
The complete grocery list is included in the free Family Beach Vacation Bundle if you’d like to print it and bring it along on your next trip.
Family Beach Vacation Favorites
Over the years, we’ve tested a lot of products, packed way too much, forgotten important things, and learned what actually makes our trips easier.
These are a few of our family’s favorite beach vacation items that have earned a permanent spot on our packing list.
Beach Canopy
If I could only recommend one beach purchase from this year’s trip, it would be our canopy. Having reliable shade for the entire family made our beach days much more comfortable.

This was one of my favorite purchases of the year. It gave us a large place to relax without using multiple towels and helped keep sand under control.
